"The most important lesson I’ve ever learned in improv is to just keep going. It’s so easy to get discouraged and, as a result, stop improvising. That’s why finding ways to stay motivated is essential for me.I’ve discovered several strategies to maintain my motivation. One has been taking classes with teachers who genuinely believe in their students. Students tend to rise to the expectations of their teacher, so it has been crucial for me to learn from instructors who believe that every student in their class can succeed. And, each time I feel successful, it fuels my drive to keep going.Another key motivator is working with people who intentionally bring joy. Improv is rooted in joy and fun, so I’ve found it essential to surround myself with people who are intentional about fostering positivity—and to be intentional about fostering it myself. This mutual commitment to joy allows us to do our best work together and keeps me inspired to keep going.
I’ve also learned the value of a supportive community of improvisers who truly believe in each another. Community is everything. We’ll all have improv shows that are amazing and others that are underwhelming, but a strong community will lift us up and encourage us to keep going.
Finally, I stay motivated by reminding myself why improv matters. Joy and laughter make the world a better place, and improv is my way of a putting a little love back into the world. Knowing that keeps me going."
