"I had Bianca Casusol as my teacher when I took level 2 at the Magnet for the first time. She had us play a game where we'd do scenes with one person deliberately trying to break as many improv "rules" as possible. Stuff like not "yes and"-ing. Breaking the fourth wall. Denying your scene partner's reality. Or not interacting with your scene partner at all. All the stuff we're trained from the beginning of level 1 not to do.
I don't think any of us were prepared for how funny it would be. After a few scenes of this, everyone in the class was laughing uncontrollably. Bianca said the purpose of the lesson was to not stress so much about following the rules. They are there to help us, but we can still be funny if we forget, bend or break them. As someone who really stresses about doing things right and doesn't come from a theater background, this really helped me unclench and get comfortable on stage."
Check out Patrick on stage at the Magnet on Thursdays at Musical Megawatt with his ensemble Mona Lisa or on Livewire with Breakfast Martini!
