Ask an Improviser

"What is the most important improv lesson you ever learned?"

Performer Eleanor Lewis
Magnet Theater
"Cheat out, speak clearly, stand downstage, and don't make too many undirected movements. "But Eleanor, that's just basic stagecraft!". Yeah, and I stand by it! Becoming aware of the basic rules of how to present yourself to an audience is like 50% of the battle, remembering to still do them when you're stressed out and nervous is another 20%. The remaining 30% is like yes and and object work and making committed choices, etc. But nobody's gonna know about your supportive yes anding and your precise, evocative object work and your very funny and cool physical commitment if you're facing the wrong way, mumbling, hiding upstage, and flailing around!"

Check out Eleanor on the Magnet stage in her Wednesday Night Megawatt Ensemble Macbeth and on Saturdays at The Armando Diaz Experience
