"I don't know if you could call this a lesson per se but it's a philosophy that I have developed over my years of improvising. Warning: it's really really stupid, so stupid, in fact, that it's almost impossible to forget. Here it is: if there's a thing, do the thing. What the hell does that mean? Basically I have noticed with beginners, both having been one and having coached many, that there's a tendency to make excuses to not take action in a scene. Oh no, we can't fly a plane to Morocco because... I actually can't perform this surgery because... I can't sing this opera because... The reason is always fear. So the improviser will stall. Don't. That's the thing. Do the thing. Do it badly, do it absurdly, but do it. The only way through a scene is forward. So, do the thing. And the beauty of this is that an improviser doing something incompetently is amazing fodder for their teammates. So, that's it. Do the thing. "
