Ask an Improviser

"What is the most important improv lesson you ever learned?"
Performer Kayleigh Reichman
Magnet Theater
"Your unique, individual voice will always be the most important thing you can develop in improv.

One of the things I love most is watching improvisers reveal a little bit of themselves in every scene, even when playing someone completely different from who they are. This lesson took me a while to learn for myself, however, because I, like I’m sure many of us performers, felt most comfortable not being myself on stage, and the thought that I was showing something of who I really was felt too revealing, too vulnerable. But then I realized that it was the little bit of Kayleigh in all of my scenes that made them what they were, and once I accepted that, my improv got better.

So don’t be afraid to bring yourself to your improv - whether it’s a true opinion you have, a chance to infodump about one of your interests, or a real reaction you would have. Or maybe it’s just a particular choice your brain feeds you in the moment that’s totally different from what anyone else would do or say in your place. No one else can make the same weird and wonderful scene that you and your scene partner will make together. "
