Ask an Improviser

"What is the most important improv lesson you ever learned?"

Performer Mary Johnson
Magnet Theater
"Listening to our scene partners' characters (what they say and how they say it, what they do and how they do it) + listening to our own characters = all we need to make magic! Every ingredient necessary to creating and maintaining a great scene is present from our first moments onstage: how is my character holding their body? What are they doing with their hands and face? These split-second questions will unlock an avalanche of answers, and all of a sudden we have access to our character's mood, obsessions, and who their crushes and rivals and frenemies will be. Who could ask for anything more?"
