Ask an Improviser

"What is the most important improv lesson you ever learned?"

Performer Sulaiman Beg
Magnet Theater
"It’s an unfortunate fact but the world is full of assholes. And because good improv presents a humorous reflection of the absurdities of our world, chances are in a scene someday you’ll be playing one. A shitty boss, a shitty boyfriend, a shitty waiter. Anyone can be an asshole! And sadly in real life, we often see them succeed. It sucks! But not in improv. In improv, the asshole can never win. Your job is to make the shitty boss lose. Your team’s job is to make the shitty boss lose. Take their status, their philosophy, their want and turn it against them. The worse we see them lose, the funnier it is. Don’t be afraid to be the asshole, but you have to be willing to lose. We see enough assholes succeed in real life, we don’t want that in an improv scene."
