About the Show

Poet Maggie Smith once wrote: "Art begets Art".

John Keating in Dead Poet's Society said, "We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."

So for National Poetry Month- let's put that into practice with poets reciting original verse and/or published poems that resonate with them. After each poem recitation, musical improvisers will do a scene into song inspired by the poem.

Then, at the end of the night- the poets will craft an on the spot original poem, recapping the musical journey that once occurred. Perhaps it's a Shakespeare sonnet, haiku, or limerick. That all depends on the tonality of the evening.

This night is celebrating spoken word, That's put to song watching their words take flight, A poem on the stage finally heard, A story breathes new life into its sight. And at the Magnet this night shall take place, It April where the rain gives way to bloom, Some comedy and tragedy in space, From forth these actors dancing in the room. After an hour the show will be no more, Ephemeral as way leads on to way, Poetry in motion not keeping a score, Some tunes will stick, people in lobby stay. If music be the food of love play on, But poetry provides the hydration.
