Where to Start with Short Humor Pieces with Luke Burns
Class Description
Have you always wanted to write short humor pieces but don’t know where to start? Or have you written a few drafts of pieces, but find that you have trouble translating your ideas into prose? This workshop is all about helping you get over those initial difficulties. Students will bring in pitches for short humor pieces, and by the end of class they’ll have a title, a specific angle, a list of jokes and beats, a map for how to move forward, and the confidence to jump right into writing that first draft.
Luke Burns is a writer whose work has been published by The New Yorker, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency, New York Magazine, and in the books The Best of McSweeney’s Internet Tendency and The McSweeney’s Book of Politics and Musicals. He works as a humor writing coach, teaching individuals, small groups, and workshops. He's also a sketch director and sketch coach for indie teams around New York City.
