Class Description

This workshop is dedicated to the fundamentals of improvised narratives. How do we keep a story fun and cohesive without getting too wrapped up writing the “plot”? With a focus on characters, relationships, teamwork, and the "dramatic question," we can build improv sets with a beginning, middle, and end, without the writer’s block.

The class does this by focusing on a few concepts that I’ve found to be important in my own narrative sets which I’ve performed for several years as part of Musical Megawatt, as well as a slew of other teams like the Saga and Freeze Frame. Topics would include: letting the little things “matter," not letting let the first “idea” slip past you, world-building, bringing characters together, and more. The goal of the class would be to give students the fundamentals so that they can go off and make their own narrative forms.

Instructor: Adam Payne

Adam Payne is a motion graphics artist, filmmaker, and improvisor based out of Brooklyn, NY. He's been studying improv since 2013 when a sad breakup made it clear that he really needed to pick up a new hobby. It worked out for the best as he now gets to spend his free time among the nicest and funniest people he's ever met. Since then he's studied under several great instructors, including Rick Andrews, Nick Kanellis, Peter McNerney, Louis Kornfeld, Ross Taylor, Jon Bander, Michael Lutton, and Nikita Burdein, just to name a few.

He can also be seen solving Rubik's cubes on subways. Feel free to ask him about this.
