Character Writing and Performance with Amanda Xeller

Class Description

This 8-week course introduces students to the fundamentals of writing and performing solo characters. Through physicality, sound, costumes and props, contextual and writing prompts, students will write and perform characters unique to them each week. This class will also provide an overview of key concepts and terminology touchstones in sketch and character writing. Students will need a notebook and a pen.

Instructor: Amanda Xeller

Amanda Xeller is a character comedian, sketch writer, and director residing in Brooklyn. Her work has been featured across the United States, Canada, and as a part of several Sketch Festivals including most recently San Francisco (Jan 2025), Toronto (March 2025), & Montreal (May 2025). She won the coveted Best of the Fest award at Montreal Sketchfest ‘25 and won the Lifetime Achievement Award at Montreal Sketchfest '22.

She’s been on Adult Swim, Disney+, in music videos, short films, on podcasts, etc. She's competed in 3 comedy competitions and won all of them baby!

Amanda produces Character Night, which is regarded as one of the best character showcases in NYC, and produced the annual Moxie Sketch Lab for women, trans, and non-binary comedians for 11 years. She has directed for BoogieManja and The Magnet Theater and teaches character writing and performance at the Magnet Theater.

Amanda graduated from the Terry Knickerbocker Studio Acting Conservatory in May 2024. She has studied comedy at the Magnet Theater, Annoyance NY, & Upright Citizen's Brigade and clowning at Movement Theater, Barrow Group, and with Complicité in London, England.

Amanda’s originally from Houston, Texas. She’s a runner, a drummer, and lover of horror movies.
