Satire and Humor Festival: Using That Sh*t-Mining Your Marginality for Humor with Felipe Torres Medina
Class Description
So you’re not a cis, straight, white, able-bodied male and you wanna do satire. Turns out you can do it, despite the fact that 60% of network late night hosts are white guys named James. This two-hour workshop will show you how you can use your “otherness” as a source for satire that has a strong perspective. Students will read classic satire pieces that turn marginality on its head, work through brainstorming, discuss how to pitch pieces like these to white editors and audiences, and leave the class with a title and an idea for their next satire piece. This workshop will help students know that their greatest strength in comedy can come from their biggest frustrations with the world. Felipe Torres Medina is a satirist from a country you misspell. He is a writer for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and his humor writing has been featured in The New Yorker, McSweeney’s, Points In Case, Bustle, BuzzFeed, CollegeHumor, and more.
