Who’s There? You are! Or at least you will be after this class!
To be a master at comedy you have to master the classics. Nothing is more classic than the Knock Knock Joke and no one does it better than 9-year old Asher Hersbtman. After conquering the PS 261 talent show, Asher will stop by the Magnet to teach a special workshop for you in the art of timing your knocks, deciding what kind of door are you knocking on, and properly revealing who actually is there. Youll also learn advanced techniques like the doorbell move and screen doors. Course time will also be dedicated to instruction on clever puns especially related to farting.

Russ started improvising during high school in Ann Arbor Michigan. There, he and his friends formed a group that they believed to be very “high brow,” but looking back, they are now pretty sure they mostly just made up fart jokes and mocked their principle. Since then, Russ has come a long way, honing his craft at iO and Second City in Chicago before making The Magnet Theater his improv home base.
As a teacher of long-form, Russ tries to keep it positive. He emphasizes physical and emotional focus. His objective is to get everyone on board and be okay with playing together. Russ also likes to incorporate tons of metaphors into his teaching. For instance rather than just tell you to “follow the fear,” as most improv teachers might, Russ, a native of Indianapolis, might quote racecar driver Mario Andretti. “If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough.”
Russ is currently teaching Level 2: Intro to Longform improv. Check out a listing of our available classes on the Magnet Theater website.

Yep. You are a Lawyer and you want to know how to improvise better. THIS is for you.
The ability to improvise – no matter what you are confronted with – is the hallmark of a truly effective lawyer. Many parallels exist between good lawyering, trial advocacy and improv comedy. Improvisers have developed tools that can help them draw an audience into a constructed stage reality. Trial lawyers have a similar goal: drawing a jury into a reconstructed version of events. Joey Novick is an attorney and nationally renowned instructor of humor and improv workshops. During this interactive workshop, he will lead you in a series of exercises that will show you how applying improv techniques in various contexts can help you become a more effective attorney, mediator or arbitrator. Youll also find out how using improv techniques can help you add strength, animation and powerful persuasive techniques in the courtroom, at the settlement table, or when negotiating a wide variety of issues.
This is a New York State Continuing Legal Education accredited course where participants earn three (3) CLE credits.
