Fitness for Actors
Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays, 5:45 pm - 6:45 pm starting Jul 26, 2010
Cost: $77
This 12-week program is targeted to meet the unique and specific needs of performing artists. Fitness for Actors will prepare you for the myriad unknown challenges an actor faces and turn you into a ‘stage athlete.’ Actors need strong, creative, expressive movement with ease through multiple planes; relaxation, even during vigorous movements; grounded, centered, emotionally connected movement; strength in all directions of joint mobility; the ability to warm-up anywhere; instant relaxation techniques; flexibility; breath control and strength. This program will provide you with these tools as well as provide the opportunity to tap into and improve your ability to be playful, imaginative, spirited, inspirational and fun. Fitness for Actors meets three evenings weekly. The program includes Energy Flow on Mondays, Yoga Tune Up® on Wednesdays and Nia on Fridays. The combination of these classes will established a superior level of fitness and self-awareness, which translates into your being at ease, moving gracefully, and being fully, emotionally present in your body.

This cost for the entire program is $250. You can pay per month at $99/month or class cards good for six classes are $77. Single classes are $20 each. New Students: First Class is $5

Energy Flow takes you first to deep relaxation, then up to high intensity and finally, back into deep relaxation again. The end result is an amazing combination of increased metabolism, free, easy movement and deep relaxation. The Yoga Tune Up® class is devoted to the detail work of your physical body. Using yoga as a template, we notice what about our own body is preventing easy entry into the poses. Then we stretch and tone and loosen whatever muscles and joints need the attention in order to achieve mastery of a full 18-pose yoga practice. Nia is devoted to creative, expressive movement.

In Nia we’ll explore creativity, through dance; integrated, focused and relaxed movement through martial arts; self-healing and self awareness through techniques like the Alexander Technique, the work of Moishe Feldenkrais, Thi Chi, Yoga, Jazz Modern Dance and FreeDance.

Being creative and relaxed while being “in the body” is a skill that can be developed. This program will develop that skill and maximize all-around fitness.

Throughout the course we’ll have sessions devoted to: Voice use and control Breath strength and control Body strength and integration Flexibility Easy, flowing movement Expressive, creative movement Emotionally connected movement Free dancing Improving useable strength Losing excess fat Relaxing during vigorous movements Being connected to our bodies in a creative, loving way Tai Chi movement Alexander Technique The Work of Moishe Feldenkrais Aikido movement Tae Kwon Do movement Jazz dance Modern dance

By the end of the 12 weeks you will have learned: -many meditation and relaxation techniques -warm-up and cool-down techniques you can use before/after rehearsal/performance -a full workout program that requires no equipment that you can us to stay in shape on the road; even when there is no gym available. -a full, 17 pose yoga sequence you can practice anytime. -proper body mechanics for moving the: base (legs and hips) core (spine, pelvis, chest and head) shoulders, arms and hands

Come prepared to sweat. Attendance to every session is certainly not required. For the best results, one would attend every session, but missing now and then will not prevent you from gaining fitness tips and learning valuable information, skills and tools that will be useful throughout you career and your life.
